Bodywork includes all forms of massage techniques and other types of touch therapies. It has been practiced as a healing therapy for centuries, in nearly every culture around the world.
energywork
The human body is multidimensional. Our subtle energies directly affect our well-being. Therapies such as reiki, therapeutic touch and qi gong help balance the body’s internal energies and restore complete health.
ayurvedic therapies
Ayurveda, or “the science of life,” is a healing system developed in India over 5,000 years ago. It works by identifying a person’s ideal state of balance and bliss, then uses diet, herbs, aromatherapy, massage treatments, asana (poses) and meditation to assist in the dynamic integration between our environment, body, mind and spirit. All treatments offered are customized to your particular needs and are completely natural and gentle.
therapeutic
Services such as Rolfing, cranial sacral, chiropractic care, and muscle activation techniques help maintain and restore maximum movement and balanced strength throughout the body. Functional movement is the central component to being healthy, and these services all help maximize the functions of the entire body.
eastern therapies
The philosophy of traditional Chinese medicine reflects the classical belief that human beings have an intimate relationship with the environment on all levels and that the universe is made up of energy called qi. The body is a complex subsystem of energy and matter working together to maintain a healthy mind and body. Treatments such as acupuncture, tui na, and cupping increase circulation, speed healing, and help restore balance (qi) within the body.

thai yoga +
Performed on a floor mat, wearing loose, comfortable clothes. It incorporates t’ai chi moves, rhythmic motion, palming and thumbing along energy lines (sen lines), gentle stretching and the conscious use of breath.
Thai Yoga is generally described as assisted Hatha yoga. During a session, the practitioner pays careful attention to the recipient’s level of flexibility and breath as they gently move the individual into different poses. Each pose is designed to open up the body and allow energy to flow freely along the sen lines. This “opening” increases joint mobility and flexibility, improves circulation, tonifies organs, and relieves muscular and emotional tension.
The stretching and energy line work in Thai Yoga is important in helping to lengthen muscles and make them more flexible, supple and less prone to injury, while joints benefit from a greater range of motion. The stretching in Thai Yoga also releases endorphins, further promoting a relaxation response.
reflexology +
A natural healing art based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet, hands and ears which correspond to every part, gland and organ of the body. Through application of pressure on these reflexes without the use of tools, crèmes or lotions reflexology relieves tension, improves circulation and helps promote the natural function of the body.
“The feet are like portals that bring in energy from the earth and generate energy flow – or the flow of prana (life force energy) – up through the legs and entire body. The feet are like switchboards of our body and microcosms of our physical health. By opening and strengthening the feet, the entire movement of energy throughout the body is enhanced, along with overall health, and stagnant energy and blood flow is released. There is a reason we all like our feet massaged, and it isn’t just about sore muscles.”
~ exercepted from “A Life Worth Breathing” by Max Strom, Yoga Master
integrated deep tissue massage +
Deep-tissue massages differ from common relaxation massages because the massage therapist uses more pressure to reach deeper layers of tissue. Movements are applied across or following the grain of the muscle in contracted areas, never against it. The style uses slow strokes, deep finger pressure and friction in areas of chronic muscular tightness.
Deep-tissue massages treat chronic tension stored in muscles and are used for therapeutic purposes as well as for relaxation. Muscle fibers are loosened by the firm, slow strokes, which in turn removes tension, releases toxins and brings about relaxation. Relaxing tense muscles often increases mobility. Posture can also be improved, putting less stress on joints and other muscles as well as relieving pain Deep-tissue massage also helps reduce the thickness of scar tissue, eliminating some scars altogether, and improves circulation. (Ideal after C-Sections)

lymphatic massage +
Wake up your body’s innate healing mechanisms! Â Lymphatic massage therapy is a healing art that uses integrative massage techniques to alleviate pain and promote healing throughout your body.
The body’s lymphatic system transports a clear fluid called lymph that contains lymphocytes – immune cells that protect your body against bacteria, viruses and other harmful matter. The lymphatic system also regulates waste and fluid removal. When the lymphatic system is blocked, toxic fluids build up in the body, which can cause fatigue and illness. Â The purpose of lymphatic massage is to clear any blockages that may have accumulated thereby boosting your immune system and releasing toxins from your body.

reiki +
An Eastern healing tradition whose purpose is to rebalance the complex energy systems that compose the body when they have become out of balance. In this tradition, people are considered to be surrounded by an unlimited universal energy source from which the physical universe is built. The energy systems in the healthy body are in balance, but they can be disrupted by stress, and this unbalancing may have physical manifestations such as pain. The reiki practitioner is trained to channel energy from the universal energy source, which flows through his or her hands to the body of the receiver. The result is the rebalancing of mind and body, the strengthening of body and spirit, the opening of energy blockages, the creation of a sense of well-being, and the healing of illnesses. Reiki sessions are generally held in a quiet setting in comfortable surroundings and may be as short as 5 minutes for treatment of a specific part of the body or as long as an hour for a full-body treatment.

Our chakras store patterns of energy from a lifetime of our experiences, both past and recent. We sometimes stash these patterns deep into a recess in our Chakras. rolfing® structural integration +
In our lives we are challenged by patterns that limit our ability to open and balance joints, breath freely and move comfortably. Connective tissue supports these patterns in our structure as well as setting the limitations in movement that we develop over time due to trauma, stress, injury, the effects of gravity, overuse, etc. It also compresses and creates rotations in joints. This effect expresses itself in your body as chronic pain, stiffness, limited range of motion and general discomfort in your body.
Connective tissue is malleable and CAN be changed. In Rolfing, we use gentle manipulation and functional movement education to open your connective tissue restrictions and help us explore ways out of our habitual, limited movement patterns.
The benefits of Rolfing include balanced and effortless posture, organized initiation of movement from the core, and reduced chronic pain.
Rolfing is not just for Yoga practitioners. It relieves chronic pain, improves function and coordination, shortens exercise/injury recovery time and helps us to be more comfortable in our bodies.
When scheduling Rolfing can either address specific issues, a session at a time, or be a full 10 Session Series. Please ask for an introductory 30 minute session or join us in our weekly Rolfing workshops at Kaia Yoga.

acupuncture +
Acupuncture is one of the main forms of treatment in traditional Chinese medicine, a time-tested system of healing known as Oriental Medicine. Practiced successfully for thousands of years in China, Japan and other Eastern countries, Oriental Medicine offers a holistic approach to health and wellness. It is used to open or adjust the flow of chi throughout the organ system, which will strengthen the body and prompt it to heal itself.
Acupuncture involves the use of thin needles that are inserted in the body at very specific points. The points are used to open or adjust the flow of chi throughout the organ system, which will strengthen the body and prompt it to heal itself. Qi moves along pathways called meridians that lie just beneath the skin. Each meridian corresponds to a specific physiological system and inner organ, forming an energetic map of the body that provides unique insight into the state of your health.
This process of acupuncture is believed to adjust and alter the body’s energy flow into healthier patterns, and is used to treat a wide variety of illnesses and health conditions. In Chinese medicine, disease is seen as imbalances in the organ system or chi meridians, and the goal of any remedy or treatment is to assist the body in reestablishing its innate harmony.
Qi is at work every moment, directing thousands of activities including circulation, sensation, inspiration, awareness and the ebb and flow of emotional tides. The harmonious flow of Qi is essential to true health.
What to expect:
The acupuncturist has a unique repertoire of methods for figuring out how to help you. Your first visit will probably take a bit longer than follow-ups, as you will be asked to provide information about your lifestyle and general state of health. You will be asked about your current symptoms, your medical history and that of close family, your diet and digestive habits, sleeping patterns and emotional state. To get an initial picture of how energies are flowing in the body, the acupuncturist will feel your pulses on both wrists, noting their quality, rhythm and strength. They will also examine your tongue; the structure, color and coating of it provide information about your physical and emotional health. The acupuncturist uses information gathered and everything observed during the interview and intake process to identify the underlying pattern of disharmony.
You will then be asked to lie down on a massage table and relax. The acupuncturist inserts fine needles (about the diameter of a hair) along meridians at specific points in order to stimulate the body’s healing response and restore natural balance. Needles may be inserted briefly and removed or left in for a period of time. Acupuncture needles are unlike those used in Western medicine and will cause little or no discomfort. There may be a slight sensation when the needle initially meets the acupuncture point, often described as a dull ache, feeling of heaviness or tingling. This sensation quickly fades, bringing a feeling of comfort and relaxation.
After your initial session, the acupuncturist will engage your partnership in implementing a treatment plan. They may ask you to return on a weekly basis until positive change is well underway. An herbal formula may be prescribed for you to take. A specific diet may also be suggested, including exercise or other activities.
One thing is certain: your treatment is yours alone. It has been customized for you and for your particular concerns. Compliance with the individualized treatment plan will enhance and further your healing progress. When progress becomes apparent, the acupuncturist may not need to see you as frequently and will modify your appointment schedule. Transforming your environment, your diet, your activities or your attitude even slightly can have a dramatic impact on your health! Your body knows what to do; help it remember.
cupping +
In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), cupping is a method of applying acupressure by creating a vacuum by hot cups to the patient’s skin. The therapy is used to relieve what is called “stagnation” in TCM terms, and is used in the treatment of respiratory diseases such as the common cold, pneumonia, and bronchitis. Cupping is also used to treat back, neck, shoulder, and other musculoskeletal pain. Its advocates claim it has other applications as well.
moxibustion +
“Moxa,” often used in conjunction with acupuncture, consists in burning of dried Chinese mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) on acupoints. “Direct Moxa” involves the pinching of clumps of the herb into cones that are placed on acupoints and lit until warm. Typically the burning cone is removed before burning the skin and is thought, after repeated use, to warm the body and increase circulation. Moxa can also be rolled into a cigar-shaped tube, lit, and held over an acupuncture point, or rolled into a ball and stuck onto the back end of an inserted needle for warming effect.
